Why We Walk:

Were you aware that 26% of Cobb County residents report dealing with some sort of mental health condition?  Mental Illness ranges from mild depression to a severe diagnosis such as schizophrenia. Look out into your neighborhood, there are four neighbors living within sight and statistically one of them privately deals with some sort of mental health issue.

Cobb County is one of the most affluent and well educated counties in Georgia. Cobb County is home to 49 public and private high schools. 28 percent of Georgia high school students said they have experienced the feeling of hopelessness and sadness during a one year period. 14.3 percent said they had seriously considered suicide in the past in the past year. And 9 percent attempted suicide in the past year. Among these Georgia youths, there are about 100 to 200 attempts for every completed suicide.

NAMI Cobb provides free classes and resources to first responders, teachers, counselors, students and families all across Cobb County and surrounding areas.  Their goal is to help the community recognize signs and know how to best approach challenging situations when mental health is part of the equation.
