Welcome!

As NAMIWalks celebrates its 15th anniversary, we invite you to take part in NAMI’s largest and most successful mental health awareness and fundraising event in the country. When you walk with NAMI, you join the movement to raise awareness of mental illness and raise funds for our mission to help individuals and families right here in our region.

One in five people will be impacted by a mental health condition in their life time.  Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Mental Health should be just as important as physical health, but it’s not.  Over 60% of people with a mental health condition will not seek help for their disability. Why? The answer is STIGMA.  Too many people have a negative stereotype of mental illness and it is keeping them from getting the help they need.

You get a headache or sniffles and you know those are warning signs of a cold or flu.  You see your friend coughing or blowing their nose and you ask them, have you seen the doctor? Are you taking care of that cold? But do you know the warning signs of mental illness? Do you know anyone that feels sad or is withdrawn for more than two weeks? Do you have friends with out of control risky behaviors? Have you seen a partner with drastic changes in behavior and sleeping patterns? These are all warning signs of mental illness.

Mental health conditions are NOT caused by personal weakness, lack of character or poor upbringing. They ARE medical conditions that can impact a person’s thinking, feeling or mood and may affect a person’s ability to function on a daily basis. Genetics, the structure of the brain, environment and lifestyle can all impact mental health.

NAMIWalks is a public display of support for people affected by mental health conditions and is one important way we are changing the way Americans view people with a mental illness. Please help us “stomp out” the stigma of mental illness and provide programs of support by sponsoring our National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) annual NAMIWalks fundraising and awareness campaign. This year’s walk will be held Saturday, May 12th, 2018, at the Albuquerque International Balloon Museum.
