We Walked for Mental Health!
On Saturday, May 6, 2017, the 12th NAMIWalks –Greater Houston took place on a beautiful sunny day at Sam Houston Park in downtown Houston, where more than 3,500 mental health advocates gathered to participate in Houston’s largest mental health awareness gathering, NAMIWalks GH, a 5K fundraising walkathon whose 2017 theme is “Lights, Camera, Action for Mental Health” shines a light on mental health initiatives for Houstonians. THANK YOU, HOUSTON! YOU ARE MAKING MENTAL HEALTH A PRIORITY!
Thousands of mental health advocates enjoyed the free festivities of the day including children’s games, face painting, art therapy, yoga demonstrations, arts and crafts, food truck: Los Perros, DJ: Mike Radcliff, Grammy Award winner, Billy Dorsey singing his NAMI inspired song, “Ending the Silence” and Ms. International, Elise Banks at the ribbon cutting….All this fun and fundraising was made possible by hundreds of volunteers, sponsors, team captains and walkers. THANK YOU, HOUSTON! YOU ARE SAVING LIVES!
What a glorious day for our Greater Houston walkers, as thousands walked shoulder to shoulder, united in our common quest to support good mental health in Greater Houston: Walking for Hope; Walking for Recovery; Walking to End Senseless Stigma; Walking for Mental Health Advocacy; and Walking to Find the Scientific Code to Cure Brain Illnesses. NAMIWalks GH’s fundraising will be accepted until July 6th, so there is still time to support mental health for all Houstonians by donating above or mailing in your donation to the above address. Thank you to each of you who are helping make this year's NAMIWalks season a success!
Mari Ledergerber, Vice President, NAMI Greater Houston
Who We Are
NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation's leading voice on mental health. Today, we are an association of hundreds of local affiliates, state organizations and volunteers who work in your community to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need. NAMI Greater Houston helps thousands of Houstonians who face mental illness every day.
This year NAMI awarded NAMI Greater Houston as NAMI Affiliate of the Year!
What We Do
NAMI relies on gifts and contributions to support our important work:
We educate. Offered in thousands of communities across the United States through NAMI State Organizations and NAMI Affiliates, our education programs ensure hundreds of thousands of families, individuals and educators get the support and information they need.
We advocate. NAMI shapes national public policy for people with mental illness and their families and provides volunteer leaders with the tools, resources and skills necessary to save mental health in all states.
We listen. Our toll-free NAMI HelpLine allows us to respond personally to hundreds of thousands of requests each year, providing free referral, information and support—a much-needed lifeline for many.
We lead. Public awareness events and activities, including Mental Illness Awareness Week and NAMIWalks, successfully fight stigma and encourage understanding. NAMI works with reporters on a daily basis to make sure our country understands how important mental health is.
As NAMIWalks Greater Houston celebrates its 12th anniversary, we invite you to take part in one of the most successful NAMIWalks campaigns throughout the country!
Join the movement to raise awareness of mental health conditions and to raise funds for our mission to help individuals and families right here in Greater Houston.
