Rising rates of mental illness and poor access to care is one of the most pressing concerns for Idahoans statewide, as well as the social stigma that keeps individuals from asking for help. Internationally, Rotary recognizes this critical need and the impact of stigma as one of the biggest barriers to accessing care.

Just as we’ve done with polio, Rotary has the power to activate communities and effect lasting change, creating hope for millions who suffer.

In Idaho the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) stands up to stigma with education,

support, and advocacy at a local and statewide level. NAMI Walks events are free community-based events that build fellowship, promote hope and healing, debunk stigma, and raise funds for support, education, and advocacy for Idaho individuals with mental illness, their families.

In partnership with Rotary, NAMI Idaho seeks to stage NAMI Walks events in Boise, Twin Falls, Pocatello, and Idaho Falls in celebration of May as National Mental Health Awareness Month. Clubs can partner with NAMI Idaho in whatever way works best for them: from helping to plan and execute their community's event, to organizing club teams (which will raise funds toward our district goal), hosting resource tables, and promoting discussions about mental illness and resources at a club level.

We in Rotary District 5400 can be leaders in championing change, collaborating with those who are already doing the work and elevating this important issue. In short, Creating Hope for all.
