Dear Family and Friends,

Welcome to my personal NAMIWalks NYC Metro page.  I am walking for NAMI-NYC Metro (he National Alliance on Mental Illness), because the work they do is very important to me and close to my heart.  The work has added passion and purpose again to the so-changed life that I have been rebuilding since my husband Steve died suddenly five years ago in early May 2012.

This year NAMI Metro NYC will hold its NAMIWalk on Saturday, May 13, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The 3.1 mile walk starts at the South Street Seaport Promenade, covers 75% of the Brooklyn Bridge and ends at Town Hall. (Please see NamiWalks New York City Metro link above for all details.)  I last walked in Westchester NAMIWalks' first Walk in 2013 and raised nearly $10,000 from my family and friends.  it is with renewed vigor that I will now walk with NAMIWalks Metro-NYC, as I have lived on the Upper West Side since 2015.

As the largest grassroots mental health organization in NYC, NAMI-NYC Metro provides support, education and advocacy for thousands of New Yorkers affected by mental illness. NAMI-NYC Metro is a lifeline for many people and families who need a place to turn. It gives them help and hope.

Most of you know that I have lived with bipolar disorder for 45+ years.  Notwithstanding a few very serious periods of illness, primarily depression, I have had a good life, and I am grateful.  I have worked hard to manage the illness well.  In 2007 I trained as a NAMI In Our Own Voice presenter in Westchester to educate, provide support, share practical advice for achieving recovery and help reduce stigma about mental illness.  I have spoken to individuals and dozens of groups including people with mental illnesses and their family, high school and college students, mental health professionals and trainees, and civic organizations.  I also served on the Board of Directors of Westchester NAMI (2006 - 2012).

If you can, please come and walk with me over the East River on what I hope will be a beautiful spring day, or join me by making a charitable donation to support my participation in the Walk.   Your donation directly supports the mission of NAMI-NYC Metro and it means a lot to me personally.  Any amount would be appreciated.  Visit my personal home page at namiwalks.org/participant/FranB.  Donating to me through this page is easy, fast and secure.  A link will enable you to donate online directly to my team -- Fran's Family and Friends:  Changing the Response, and you can also register to walk with me.  NAMI is a 501(c)3 charity and any donation you make is tax deductible.

Many thanks in advance for your support.

With love, Fran
