For those who don't know, my mother, Joanne DeMartini suffered from mental illness throughout my childhood until she took her own life almost thirteen years ago. While she suffered from manic depression and schizoaffective disorder, she was the most loving, gracious, warm, and welcoming mother a son could have. My mother’s mental illness affected my childhood dramatically, if awareness was higher and medical support better, she could have had a very different outcome, something I still wish today.
In honor of her thirteen-year anniversary since she passed (May 15th) and Mother's Day on May 14th, my wife Leigh DeMartini, my daughter Lily Joanne DeMartini, recently born son Cole Parker DeMartini and I will be walking in the 11th annual NAMIWalks NYC event on Saturday May 13th. The walk raises awareness of mental health issues and raises funds for NAMI-NYC Metro's no-cost support, advocacy and education services for families and individuals impacted by mental illness. If you would like to join us in the walk/run, please register at the link below:
This is an issue I care deeply about (so much so that I recently joined the Board) and it would mean so much to me if you could help me get to my goal of $25,000 by Saturday, May 13th. To make a tax-deductible contribution, support me in my efforts, and help change the lives of families and individuals living with mental illness, please click here:
Does your company match charitable donations? Double your impact with a matching donation from your employer. This money will be put to good use as NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness) is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans impacted by mental illness.
Please let us know if you plan to attend the walk/run as we would really appreciate your company and support. Leigh plans to do the 5k run with Cole and Lily and I will be doing the walk.
